Teenagers in credit card debt – Tips for Success
Credit cards have become so ubiquitous that even high school and college students are carrying them. In the past few years college campuses have become the number one marketing target for credit card companies and now 80% of college students are graduating with credit card debt. Most of these students have never had a job, and now they are starting their adulthoods already deeply in debt. It has gotten so bad that 19% -almost one in five –of U.S. bankruptcies are now college students.
How does this descent into poverty and indebtedness happen? It starts out simply enough. Most of the credit card companies on campus offer free t-shirts or other free merchandise just for signing up. Many students just to get the freebies, but then they use the cards here and there, for gas or pizza or school supplies. The debt accumulates, little by little, and soon the student may be thousands of dollars in debt.
It doesn’t have to be this way. It is possible to teach teens wise money management skills. Here are some tips to help:
First, do not give a teenager a credit card. This is the last thing they need, and is a great way to teach them to be irresponsible.
Secondly, teach them the difference between wants and needs. Buying gasoline to get to work and back is a need; a ninety dollar pair of sneakers is a want. Emphasize this over and over until they understand.
Third, show your teens the family budget. Help them understand where the money comes from, where it goes, and why. An excellent way to help them learn to live within a budget is to give them the grocery money for the week, take them to the store, and allow them to spend it. Emphasize that this is all the money you have to spend on groceries and whatever they buy has to last the week.
Fourth, help your children decide on some money goals –things they want or need money for –and then come up with some ways to earn the money. Encourage them to come up with the money themselves. If they need budgeting help or financial education, urge them to visit with www.nonprofitdebtconsolidationservice.com.
Fifth, if, despite your help, your children land in financial trouble, don’t be too quick to bail them out. If you bail them out too often it will encourage dependence and a ‘mom and dad will fix it’ attitude.
It is never too late –or too early –to teach your children financial responsibility. Doing so could literally be priceless!

Keeping An Eye On Your Personal Finances
The majority of us are sticklers for finances at work, but often disregard our personal finance at home. For those who are not accountants, the process of keeping financial records and ensuring all financial items are squared away can be quite boring and often confusing. Instead of ignoring your personal finance until a problem arises, take the initiative today!
The most important aspect of your personal finance is undoubtedly your credit. Your credit score, often a mystical number of much confusion, is critical to your success in the financial realm. Without a respectable credit score, you will be unable to borrow money or obtain a home or vehicle loan. This number can literally hold you back from completing your goals and can severely limit your future.
The credit in your name has a direct bearing on the credit number. Thus people who do not use their credit cards properly and have huge bills running in their names lend a bad streak to their credit. A point to be noted is that it is not the amount you charge but it is the amount that is kept on credit that poses the threat of being harmful. It is important to keep a check on the monthly statement and you should endeavor to pay it in full each month.
In today’s society, identity theft is often a problem. If someone steals your identity, they can wreck your finances, ruin your credit, and tarnish your good name and reputation. In order to prevent identity theft, carefully monitor all your financial statements and safe guard your personal information.
The attitude of most people towards money is spending today and saving later, thus relegating saving for a later part of their life. But this habit catches them unawares in the later part of their life where they get jolted with the rude shocks of a fast approaching retirement date and a non-existent retirement fund. So do not wait for tomorrow, start saving today by putting some portions of your income in the retirement fund account.
One of the best ways to handle the finances is a budget. This is the best way to keep a tab on the finances and keeping the spending in control. When you create a budget you need to make two columns, one meant for the incomes and the second for expenditures. You need to mention all the items of expenditure in the expenses column such as rent or mortgage payment, car payment, insurance, utilities, and food. Whatever is left after deducting all this from the income is the monthly excess that of course can be used in different ways.
It’s a good idea to consult an accountant if you are not sure about setting your personal finance records straight. This person will help you correct any potential problems and ensure nothing goes wrong in the future.
The world of finance is fascinating. There’s no need to be scared of it. Just keep your finances straight and you will be able to build, or rebuild, your credit score.

American Credit Scores Crash To New Lows
“Figures provided by FICO Inc. show that 25.5 percent of consumers — nearly 43.4 million people — now have a credit score of 599 or below, marking them as poor risks for lenders. It’s unlikely they will be able to get credit cards, auto loans or mortgages under the tighter lending standards banks now use,” according to the AP. Historically, just 15 percent of the 170 million consumers with active credit accounts, or 25.5 million people, fell below 599, according to data posted on Myfico.com.The recession, tight lending practices by banks, and unemployment have caught up to the consumer credit market, and the trend is likely to worsen.
Banks, particularly regional and community financial firms, are struggling with defaults on both residential and commercial mortgages. To stay out of the clutches of the FDIC, they have become remarkably cautious about lending, even to people with good credit scores.
The number of people who have been unemployed for over six months is now in the millions and nearly 25 million Americans are out of work. This population is not likely to see their credit scores repaired for years.
The young, for years targets for credit card companies, are unemployed at higher rates than people over 25. That means that this “feeder” population for credit cards is falling and some of these people noe have no credit scores at all.
Another trend that has hurt credit scores immensely is the disappearance of home equity loans which were once taken out by huge numbers of Americans who had houses worth more than their mortgages. Now, more than 11 million mortgages in the US are underwater. People are abandoning homes that are being foreclosed upon. Either of those actions severely damages credit ratings.
One of the long-term effects of low credit scores is a likely long-term drop in consumer spending. People often cannot afford to buy things by paying cash. And austerity is the rule of the day.
