Letter: Advanta Closing All Business Credit Cards
credit

This is the letter received today from Advanta announcing the closing of all business credit cards at the end of the Month. According to the Consumer Affairs blog, Advanta was having horrible losses.

You can actually read the letter text in the LARGE size photo.

The main problem of course is all the bills that are set to auto pay. I don’t have another business credit card to pay them. Therefore, I am forced to intermingle business and personal expenses which is a VERY BAD thing from a liability perspective since is it a method used to pierce the corporate veil. I’ll have to see if bills can be paid via check until we can sort this out.

And what is up with the auto white balance? That letter is supposed to be white! Proof once again why you should always shoot in raw. :)

Some Credit Score Basics

Do you know how your credit score is calculated?

I am amazed at the number of people I talk to that do not understand that the calculation of your credit score is more than just paying your bills on time.

While that is certainly a major part of your score, there are 4 other factors that you need to keep in mind in order to maintain the best credit score possible.

There are several scoring calculators out there but the one that is the most utilized is the FICO score. The Fair Isaac Company, FICO for short, has only in the past few years released the parameters that they use when calculating the ‘FICO’ score. This number is used to decide your credit worthiness when you are applying for loans of any kind, so use this acronym to remember the five parts of your credit score:

L -  Late payments – ALWAYS PAY ON TIME

O – Owed vs. Credit Limits – KEEP THIS AT 35% OR LESS

A – Average age of all your credit cards – DON’T CLOSE

      OLD CARDS

N – New applications for credit – NO MORE THAN ONE

      EVERY 4-6 MONTHS

S – Spread – KEEP A GOOD SPREAD OF TYPES OF CREDIT

Okay, so I was reaching for that last one, but the idea there is to have both revolving (credit cards) and installment (mortgage or car loans). I don’t mean that you should go out and buy a house or car just to get an installment loan, only that the FICO algorithm does take that into account. The stability implied by these types of loans makes you look more reliable.

The first two categories above (L & O) account for 65% of your score.

Building credit takes a long time but you can ruin it quite quickly so keep the above factors in mind the next time you are tempted to pay late or run up that credit card to its limit.

The Ins and Outs of Student Loans

In our day when a bachelor’s degree doesn’t get you all that much any more, students are being taken advantage of. I can understand higher prices for graduate school, but the undergrad prices are absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. Current first-year students had been expected to graduate in 2011 with an average loan obligation of ,000 a number that would have continued to increase for subsequent classes. But by converting loans to grants, Bowdoin will eliminate a significant debt burden for next year’s entering class while capping debt at current levels for continuing students. So the future, we could see Sharia student loans that work like venture capital. The lender would get a cut of the student’s future earnings.

A student that gets a federal student loan made directly to them must be a half or full time student attending university or college. Payment does not start until they drop to less than a half time student or finish school. Loans that parents take have a much higher limit but payment for these federal student loans starts immediately. Interest begins to accrue immediately on private student loans made to parents or students but the limits are higher and after graduation, payments start. Between tuition, room and board, books, and other necessary items, many students find themselves short of the final total. One way to save money when searching for a college education is to choose the institution wisely. Financial note: Alternative college student loan financing is based largely on an individual’s and/or cosigner’s FICO score. Generally speaking, the higher the FICO score the lower the interest rate will likely be.

During college or university, student loans continue to accumulate posing a very unnerving picture when the time comes for the students to start paying them back. Freshly out of college or university after completing their education, it can be very difficult to start making monthly repayments on loans, other debts and student loans. Most graduates have to work their way up into high paying jobs but still need money during this time for accommodation, food, clothing, transport, other items and loan repayments. It is inconvenient, problematic, and expensive to make student loan repayments along with other debts such as other loans, overdraft and credit card debts.

One of the easiest and best alternatives for paying back several loans plus the interest is to consolidate all the loans and increase the repayment length. A student loans debt consolidation program helps a graduate by adding the loans together resulting in only one payment instead of three, four or more payments. This also drops the interest rate and reduces the payment amount. It is very difficult paying multiple lenders at once not only financially but because it is easier to miss a payment accidentally.

Consolidating your student loans generally means one lender will group together your various loans and lock them in at a new, fixed rate. Many people who consolidate their loans appreciate having only one bill to pay every month as well as the knowledge that their rates won’t change over time. Also, students loans are not enforceable when the school has closed prior to the student completing his education. These challenges could be raised in a Chapter 13 proceeding and decided by a bankruptcy judge. There’s just one number to call to change your address or student status, or request deferment forms. The variable interest rate will never exceed 8.25 percent and may be lower during in-school, grace and deferment periods.

Agencies may also use student loan repayment benefits in conjunction with a physicians’ comparability allowance (PCA). However, 5 CFR 595.105(e) requires that the amount of the PCA be reduced by the amount of the student loan repayment. You can repay on an “income-contingent” basis, meaning your financial income will determine the amount of your monthly payments. Our international student loan program requires a US co-signer and is available for both graduate and undergraduate study. Also, we would like to provide you with some very important information regarding federal student loan consolidation. You must consolidate during your grace period to avoid an interest rate increase of 0.60%. Compare and apply for student loans from multiple lenders to make the best education financing choice for you and your family. We understand that students need the most affordable student loan rates on the market, access to true professionals that enjoy helping others, and repayment flexibility. What Is My Credit Score or FICO Score

Too Much Credit

What Is My Credit Score or FICO Score

What is my credit score is an important question to get answered for financial reasons. To know What is my credit score you will have to first understand What is a credit score. The credit score which is also known as FICO score is a concept created by Fair Isaac Corporation. Fico score is proprietary of Fair Isaac Corporation and hence the formula used to calculate the Fico score is under the wraps.

Credit score is a three digit number which defines an individual’s credit worthiness. Higher the credit score better is an individual’s credit worthiness and hence lower is the risk of lending to the individual.

From Bankers to employers many use credit score as a base to determine the financial risk. Hence it is very important to know how much is the credit score and try to improve the credit score as much as possible, though not everyone lends based on credit score.

Good credit score ranges anywhere from 825 to 650. Low credit score is from 575 to 650. Anything below 575 is considered as Bad credit score. For someone with a good credit score the rate of interest will be lesser as the risk associated is lesser compared with someone with a bad credit score.

Credit scores are determined based on the following factors.

1. Payment history

Payment history says about your past financial obligations and how quickly you met them. Problems such as bankruptcy will reduce your credit score. If you paid your credits promptly you will get a higher credit score.

2. Current debt

How much you owe contributes to your credit score. This factor considers the present financial position. If you are in debt with a large number of sources then obviously it is going to pull down your credit score significantly.

3. Duration of Credit History

If you are having a good credit history over a long period of time, then you will land with a good credit score. It is similar to someone with longer work experience is preferred over someone with lesser work experience. Having a good credit history over longer time period is important.

4. Number of Credit

If a person has more number of credit cards, then it gives a negative impression about the person’s finance and so it will lower the person’s credit score. Someone with lesser credit sources will be given a higher credit score.

The author of the article has good knowledge in the finance sector. More information about credit score can be found at What Is My Credit Score
